Broken Head teen Leihani Zoric wins ISA under-18 world title at 13

SurfMAD! — Speed. Power. Flow.

Most 13-year-olds would take making an under-18 world final. Leihani Zoric of Broken Head, NSW, won the whole thing.

At the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in El Salvador she competed three age groups up and took under-18 women’s gold. In the final at La Bocana she posted a 16.00, the highest heat total in that girls’ division. She is the youngest surfer to win that world title — and the first Indigenous Australian surfer to win a world title at any level.

Australia’s Irukandjis also won the team title for a third straight year. Leihani was one of three Australians with individual gold. Her year already included open women’s and junior wins at the Indigenous Surfing Titles.

“My nana always told me I’d be the first Zoric world champion. And I did it.”

That’s the MAD! mindset — desire, eagerness, and enthusiasm when it counts.
